Born in India, he spent some early childhood years in the USA, but since 1970 he has lived in Prague. In 1988 he graduated from Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Czech Technical University in Prague. During his studies he shot several short films with his friends under the moniker “BulshitFilm”. He worked mostly with the cameraman Roman Včelák. His films, inspired by surrealism and the works of Jan Švankmajer and Luis Bunuel, garnered favorable responses from film professionals. In1989 he began studies in film directing at Prague's film school FAMU. His debut feature Dead Beetle premiered in 1998.
